Tis the Season to Season Your Pans

Seasoning a cast iron pan involves creating a non-stick surface by building up layers of oil and heat. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to season a cast iron pan:

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (190°C).

  2. Start by washing your cast iron pan with hot water and mild soap. Scrub it with a brush or sponge to remove any rust or debris.

  3. Rinse the pan thoroughly and dry it completely with a clean towel.

  4. Apply a thin layer of vegetable oil or melted shortening to the entire surface of the pan, including the handle.

  5. Use a paper towel to rub the oil into the pan, removing excess oil. The pan should look shiny but not greasy.

  6. Place the pan upside down on the top rack of your preheated oven on top of a baking sheet to catch drips.

  7. Bake the pan for 1 hour, then turn off the oven and let the pan cool down in the oven completely. You can also leave it in the oven overnight to cool down.

  8. Once the pan is cool, check the surface for any dry spots. Repeat the oiling and baking process, if you find any, until the entire surface is smooth and evenly coated.

With regular use and care, the seasoning on your cast iron pan will improve over time and make it a reliable, non-stick cooking surface. Avoid using soap or soaking the pan in water for long periods to maintain the seasoning. Instead, clean it with hot water and a stiff brush, and dry it thoroughly after each use. Rubbing a small amount of oil onto the surface after each use can also help to maintain the seasoning.
